Size: body ~ 1 mm
Thousands of these mites are all over my patio, tables and plants. Trying to wipe the table creates red streaks.

Velvet Mite
I don't know much about these, but from googling clover mite, I don't think that's what this is. It looks more like a velvet mite or something close. Compare with
these
.

Thank you!
Perhaps this is a Velvet Mite, however, their abdomen tapers off or narrows in the rear, come think of it, so does Clover Mite. This mite seems to be almost cylindrical. I am thinking that it may be one of the spider mites
Genus Tetranychus
something close to
Tetranychus urticae
; can I get your opinion on this possibility?

spider mite
that certainly sounds possible. It is the right size, and the amount you found sounds like the spider mites I've seen, there always seem to be hundreds of them at once.

spider mite
Thanks again! I looked at several sites for images and I just can't find any spider mite image that looks exactly like the one at
Wikipedia
so I am a bit suspicious about that image. Would you know if images at Wikipedia are actually confirmed by an expert? I am going to leave this image here for now hoping that other experts jump in.

Not sure about wikipedia
I don't think I would trust that image either. Check out
these images
. I think they are more reliable. Except for the white part of the legs look at these
Whirligig Mite
. We could be guessing forever :) maybe you should just move it to the mite guide page and hope an expert sees it.

Thanks Again!
I believe that this is a close match with
Photo#186355 so I will move it the
Superorder Acariformes
and hope an expert will decide later.
