Larva with appendages

Larva with appendages
Howell, Livingston County, Michigan, USA
August 7, 2020

Early instar
Furcula species. The appendages are modified hindmost prolegs called stemapoda. They contain extrusible filaments used in defense, perhaps especially against wasps. Certain sounds can elicit a rapid arching response accompanied by the display of the filaments. Try humming or buzzing near them or try tinkling a key chain (I haven't actually tried the latter).

Early instar
Thanks!
