Dioryctria resinosella

Dioryctria resinosella
Pine Brook, Isanti County, Minnesota, USA
August 13, 2020
There are many red pines (Pinus resinosa) with numerous dead terminal shoots in our area and widespread as an outbreak in MN (the biggest since the late 1990s according to a story by Minnesota Public Radio, etc.). I bagged a dozen or so dead shoots August 7 for possible adult eclosions but, as of August 21, none had appeared so I pulled apart the remaining mined shoots and did find one uneclosed pupa, dead and somewhat molded. Mined shoots are only sometimes used for pupation (apparently more frequently on the trunk or in litter on the ground). I have captured a number of Dioryctria at nearby lights, which sample may contain resinosella, but I cannot tell them from zimmermani which appears commonly here (as I have been told).
