Flower Crab Spider with Prey - Misumena vatia - female

Flower Crab Spider with Prey - Misumena vatia - Female
Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA
August 13, 2020
Size: 10-15 mm
I spotted this flower crab spider resting after she had finished feeding on a honeybee. Forty minutes later she began manipulating the formerly living bee, eventually taking achieving a good purchase and dropping the carcass off the edge of the flower (Aster Nova Angliae 'Purple Cloud'). She then crawled underneath the leaf, and pooped liquid white frass onto a leaf below, before clambering back on the top of the flower where she repositioned herself waiting for an another unwary bee. Several approached, but as she reached out for them, they darted off. By an hour later, she had vanished. Location: west slope of Cornell Mountain (elevation = 740 feet).
