Bee or firefly? - Chauliognathus pensylvanicus

Bee or firefly? - Chauliognathus pensylvanicus
Lake Wawasee - Turkey Creek Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana, USA
December 31, 1969
Size: 1/2 inch
At first I thought this was some variety of bee, as there were a number of them flying about and apparently pollenating Black-eyed Susans in a neighbor's garden. After researching it further, I am beginning to think its a firefly. Perhaps a variation of Pyractomena? Would appreciate any help identifying this species by scientific and common name. Thank you!

Not a bee of a fly but a beetle…we have these in Ontario too.
