Black-spotted darner - Aeshna tuberculifera

Black-spotted darner - Aeshna tuberculifera
Harsen's Island, St. Clair County, Michigan, USA
July 15, 1998
Size: 3 inch wingspan
From the time I spot a dragonfly on the wing until it lands can take an hour or more. I keep my 100mm macro lense at the ready and just watch. This photo was one of several I was able to shoot, standing 3 feet away and watching through the view finder that I was being watched. The eyes move constantly. Very fascinating to observe these efficient hunters, especially when they feed. Even though I have taken many dragonfly photos over the years, I am a novice at identifying them. Any help with this is appreciated. Could it be a female black-tipped darner?
