Why do insects have 6 legs?

I have always wondered why insects have 6 legs. I don’t think it’s for speed because there are very slow insects. I think they would be fine with 4 legs

four legs is a rather uncommon arrangement
few animals have four; average number of legs per animal is certainly more than six

although some insects do walk on 4 and use the front pair (rarely the hind pair) for something else; over the eons, some mites have also lost all legs but four

A couple of possible explanations...
