Moved to Phyllonorycter celtifoliella
Moved from
ID Request
.
Tentative ID.
Powell’s two spread images on the MPG page for “0724.97 –
Cremastobombycia sp.
– Unidentified Cremastobombycia Moths” have nothing to do with Mark Dreiling’s images . That is a page for unidentified moths and not a for a particular unidentified species. Powell’s moths are from California. Mark’s are from Oklahoma. They are of different species.
I believe that your moth may be
Phyllonorycter celtifoliella
. I agree that they match Mark’s two “
Cremastobombycia sp.
” at MPG which were both DNA test. The barcode places them in
Phyllonorycter
, not
Cremastobombycia
. They actually fall nicely in the BIN group for
P. celtifoliella
which can be much browner and more infused with dark scales. However, the illustration in Braun (1908) matches Mark’s specimens a lot better than those darker examples currently shown at MPG.

MPG has something listed as
Unidentified Cremastobombycia
but we're not sure how to tell it from

Thanks, yes that's what I als
Thanks, yes that's what I also thought (https://bugguide.net/node/view/1879243) and Tracy S. Feldmen also suggests on my post of a similar moth dated 06/23. He says it is more similar to the unidentified Cremastobombycia sp based on some features or markings on face (https://bugguide.net/node/view/1879246).

I don't know if these marking
I don't know if these markings are diagnostic, but there are some differences, at least in between the two specimens in the photos.
