Syrphid Fly? - Psellidotus hieroglyphicus - female

Syrphid Fly? - Psellidotus hieroglyphicus - Female
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
May 27, 2005
I thought this was a syrphid fly until I looked at other images in the guide. Now I am not so sure. I saw him in the morning resting on the inside of a flower pot. The fuzzies on his back were just something that was stuck to him. He wasn't large but was bigger than the "hover flies". Maybe about 1/4" to 1/2" range. I need to get a ruler! My beginner books are on their way. Can someone help me with the ID?
