Dorsal view.

Note the slender, spine-tipped cerci (see last image of series for detail view).

This is one of the largest, most wide-spread, and common dragonfly species in North America.

Upon looking closely at the inner basal borders of each wing, I was mystified by the short, tapered, strangely-opaque, ivory & black "strips" there (need to look at the full-size image to see them well). At first I thought those nararow strips were some sort of photographic artifact...but they're present in all my photos (e.g. the 3rd photo of this series), and also in other photos (like Troy's photo here, from the other side of the continent). They seem an unusual occurrence...one I haven't noticed in other insect wings.
