Staphylinidae, pupa, ventral - Platydracus maculosus

Staphylinidae, pupa, ventral - Platydracus maculosus
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 21, 2020
Size: 14- mm
August 19, 2020: found this in the garden while digging potatoes
When I find beetle pupa(e) in the soil, if it yields an adult, the adult is often malformed.

August 21, 2021: made a compacted concave area in dirt and sand to hold the pupa
August 23, 2020: pupa was dark, did not look good, did not move, in fact I thought it was dead but kept it
August 26, 2020: o/b an adult beetle. It had globs on the front tarsi which it proceeded to remove
August 27, 2020: released in garden
