beetle52805 - Euphoria inda
Windsor, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA
May 27, 2005
Size: 20-25 mm
Beetle found midday on unfurled oak leaf on sapling at edge of wet meadow. Was inactive until photograph and then it flew off preventing better photo.

Bumble flower beetle.
Nice shot of a Euphoria inda scarab beetle. Members of this subfamily (Cetoniinae) have special "hinges" that allow the hindwings to spread for flying, while keeping the wing covers (elytra) closed. The result is a convincing bee mimic when the thing is in flight!

Beetle ID
Thanks for the ID and additional info Eric - interesting critter, and, for what it's worth, the beetle sounded bee-like when it flew.
