Dicerca tuberculata? - Dicerca - Male
Steuben, Washinton County, Maine, USA
August 7, 2020
Size: 18 mm
On the trunk of small a distressed Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) tree (see: ) on hot sunny day next to small clear-cut along Pigeon Hill Road. I am not sure what this large and robust Dicerca sp. species is. The shape and sculpturing suggest D. tuberculata, but the dorsal color is totally wrong.

Addendum: Joshua Basham sent me a copy of Nelson's 1975 key, but I get stuck on #13 (page 98), which separates: D. lugubris, D. punctulata, D. dumolini, and D. tuberculata. My best attempt to follow the key leads me to D. punctulata, but Nelson's description of D. punctulata (pages 112-14) does not match. For example, the lateral pronotal margins should be nearly "parallel at base" and the elytral apices should only be "slightly produced" (compare to: ). Also, this specimen may be too large for D.punctulata. Per Nelson: "The males vary from 9.0 to 14.8 mm long and from 3.6 to 5.3 mm wide; the females from 9.6 to 16.7 mm long and from 3.6 to 6.2 mm wide."
