This little orange and black butterfly was about half the size of a Monarch.
I originally thought skipper, but searching on this website, I'm leaning towards a checkerspot of some type.

This is a "Crescent" in the genus Phyciodes. Based on date, and everything I can see, it is almost certainly P. tharos. However, there is some confusion surrounding distinctions of a few closely related and only partly understood species, and I'm not certain. The pale apical portion showing on the antennal club is a bit odd for P. tharos from this far east, but not unheard of. In the most closely similar species it is usually more orange in this paler area though.
