Eleodes? - Eleodes parowana

Eleodes? - Eleodes parowana
Zion National Park, Utah, USA
May 22, 2008
Size: 3-4cm~
The stance makes me think Eleodes, but this individual was enormous. As it was in the park itself all I collected of it is this photo. Maybe something like E. suturalis? If need be I can take it to the Sacramento collection and compare, but if you have any ideas where to start it would be most appreciated. It's hard to see, but I believe the pronotum has upturned margins.

Nice one
Not so many Eleodes in my area of Utah compared to other areas of the state. Byu's collection has 2-3 dozen drawers of Eleodes, many identified by Triplehorn, I could check parowanus next time I'm in.

This escaped my collection by
This escaped my collection by virtue of being in a National Park... lucky beetle.

was misplaced
E. tricostata has strong raised ridges on the elytra that E. suturalis does not. Otherwise they look rather similar.

Moved from Eleodes suturalis.

Eleodes suturalis
After examining the collection at the PPDC in Sacramento, I'm inclined to say this is E. suturalis, based on size, elytral striation and the up-turned pronotum
