Araneus sp.
I believe this is a male Araneus. It does not match Mangora, which has a more defined central area in the abdominal pattern. I am not sure of the species, as I have not been able to find a match, and it may be that the palp would need to be examined to confirm the species identity. I do not recall seeing this pattern in decades of looking at Florida spiders, so it could be something very interesting and/or rare to the state. But some of the small Araneus species have parts of their patterns that are similar to this one, so I suspect it is either a rare species or a rare color form.

Thought you might be interested to see this observation of what appears to be a female of the same species, north of Pensacola. I found these photos while searching BugGuide for any similar looking Araneidae in the southeast.
