What Fly? - Aldrichia auripuncta

What Fly? - Aldrichia auripuncta
Montgomery, Orange County, New York, USA
June 6, 2008
Size: 15 mm
I have no clue. What is it?

Beautiful
This is an amazing fly - we have only a single, battered specimen in the collection here, and I had no idea they looked like this when fresh. It is apparently quite rare too.

ID
Gorgeous fly! This is Aldrichia. Of the two species, ehrmanni is the only one listed from NY. However, the other species is named auripuncta, a very fitting name for this guy. A. auripuncta is listed as occurring in Pennsylvania, so it is reasonably likely to occur in NY, too. I would go with Aldrichia auripuncta. This appears to be the first shot of this fly in the guide. Congrats.

Bee fly.
No, really. Andy Calderwood can probably give you the genus, if not a species. Spectacular image of a colorful insect!
