Spotted Flower Buprestid - Acmaeodera ornata

Spotted Flower Buprestid - Acmaeodera ornata
Treyburn area, Snowhill Road, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 27, 2005
Size: circa 7 mm
Found on Sundrops, Oenothera fruticosa, a day-blooming "Evening-primrose".

These buprestids are very common right now in my area. Identification based on other images in the guide, such as those by Lynette from Cumberland County, North Carolina:

Quoting Phill Harpootlian on the id. of that beetle, this beetle is one of Acmaeodera ornata, texana, or tubulus. (Now identified as A. ornata--see comments.)
Image updated (cropped, exposure, etc.) 4/9/21.

in Michigan?
I swear I saw this in Grand Rapids, MI, yesterday along the Grand River. Looked just like this, little white dots and two white dots where the eyes should be. I saw it fly in and thought it was a hummingbird at first because it was so large! When we looked closer it was sitting on the ground like the photo with wings tucked. It was probably 3 inches long. Could this really be this beetle, in Michigan at the end of June?

Beetle in Michigan
I know you made this comment a year ago, but better late than never... Please note that the info below this beetle states that it is only 7 mm long. The beetle you describe sounds like this one, the Eyed Click Beetle:

It is 5 cm long, or 2 inches.

Patrick, This is an Acmaeode
Patrick,
This is an Acmaeodera ornata. It has too many spots to be A. tubulus and the elytra color of A. texana is more of a brownish than black.
