male adult periodical cicada/17-year cycle/brood xiv/Magicicada septendecula-ventral view - Magicicada septendecula - Male
fentress County, Tennessee, USA
June 6, 2008
Size: body-30mm w/wings-40mm
***
note in this image the narrow and distinct orange bands across ventral abdomen. this and absence of orange mark between eye and wings (which is shown in the accompanying graphic) plus shape of posterior abdomen, as noted at an excellent web site regarding cicadas, http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/fauna/Michigan_Cicadas/Periodical/Index.html
identify our specimen as a male septendecula.

also: my personal observation to this point in time attests that male septendecula has four orange bands while male septendecim has five, the last at the ventral abdominal segment proximate to genitalia.
