Phenolia grossa? - Phenolia grossa

Phenolia grossa? - Phenolia grossa
Silver Lake State Park, Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 10, 2020
Size: 7 mm
This large nitidulid was very active, which between having to hold the camera with one hand, the lighting at the time (it was very overcast that day with intermittent showers, one even occurring a few minutes before this photo was taken) made photographing this individual very difficult. This was one of two individuals of the same species which were found having tumbled out from between the folds of a chicken-of-the-woods mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus) I was harvesting off of a fallen oak log resting beside a beaver dam (beavers, however, were not the direct reason for the tree's death and collapse.) Smilax vines were growing profusely and have covered much of the log, perhaps helping to trap moisture which helped the fungus fruit so prolifically (there were over half a dozen shelves coming out of one side of this log, all growing in a horizontal row.)

I haven't encountered nitidulids this large before (at least that I remember), so while this photo (the best of the few I managed to capture) isn't good, it at least comes with contextual information that others might find of use.
