Quedius explanatus
This chunky guy is Quedius (Megaquedius) explanatus. Apparently widespread in California. Cool! We don't have anything like this in the northeast.

It's a first for Bug Guide. Sometimes these "common" insects don't show up here. (Had the same thing happen with a bee fly last week.)
