Mutillid-like wasp - Psorthaspis legata

Mutillid-like wasp - Psorthaspis legata
Avinger , Cass County, Texas, USA
September 18, 2020
Size: 1/2”
Following a black carpenter ant trail in the East Texas forest, this banded wing, mutillid-like wasp (colorfully marked abdomen) was interacting with the carpenter ants. It appeared to be searching along with stopping in depressed/hole areas. A winged mutillid would be a male, but this one’s behavior would suggest a female predatory wasp. Velvet ant mimicry?
