There were several dozen of these buprestids patrolling or resting on or near a huge felled tree, which I suspect could have been a very large Pinus resinosa because of the thick reddish bark. This smaller-sized individual (probably a male) was resting on a nearby False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosum). It lacks the six spots on the elytra which most of the other individuals possess; I think this is just variation.

I've noticed the same variation in specimens from eastern Tennessee. The ones I looked at are in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Insect collection. They were reared from the bark of a Hemlock tree. I have also trapped the other with spots on the elytra in eastern Tennessee.
