Villini

Villini
Hastings Reserve, Santa Lucia Range, Monterey County, California, USA
June 6, 2008
Size: ~ 6 mm
In Chamise chaparral.
Somewhat different in color and pattern from others I've posted.

Moved
Moved from Lepidanthrax.

Well,
I thought I had seen fairly broad abdominal scales, together with the small size...Perhaps not sufficiently reflected. I can see now that the antennae alone don't fit Lepidanthrax .
I thought to have seen a Rhynchanthrax at La Purissima some time ago, and since there's only one sp. in CA, that would be capreus . I had forgotten about it, though just see a note in my files to get a specimen this fall. Take a look and see what you think.
For now, I'll put this in Villini.
I thank both of you for keeping me alert!

Rhynchanthrax?
Hopefully Andy will be able to confirm or correct, but this looks like a species I've identified from specimens as Rhynchanthrax capreus.

ID
I have been reluctant to weigh in on this one because I have been burned on a few of my more speculative assignments. I will say that this doesn't look at all like Lepidanthrax (too elongate, face appears to be produced, abdominal scale pattern not right). I would lean toward Chrysanthrax or maybe Rhynchanthrax, though I can't see the beak from this angle.
Conservatively yours,
-Andy
