German Yellowjacket Queen Building Nest - Vespula germanica - female

German Yellowjacket Queen Building Nest - Vespula germanica - Female
Brighton, Monroe County, New York, USA
May 28, 2020
She was building her nest on the ceiling of my porch out in the open. I believe this is unusual for this species, which usually nests in a cavity of some sort. However, it gave me the opportunity to follow the construction and development of the nest.

Interesting observations
I think the death/failure rate of young nests is pretty high, although this queen got quite far along with her nest.
