Moth/Butterfly ID needed Cleveland, Ohio - Dissosteira carolina Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA September 28, 2020 Size: fairly large, maybe 2-3"
Cleveland, Ohio here, I lived here most of my relatively long life, and have been seeing something I don't recall seeing before, would like an ID. I started seeing these maybe a month or so ago. Kind of looks like a moth or butterfly, I see these during the day, tend to be solitary. Closest I can come is the Mourning Cloak, but I don't see it fitting, as I see no blue, I read more of a spring butterfly and more in mountainous regions, none here.
Often stays low to the ground and looks to me like a somewhat thick winged moth/butterfly, dark brown, almost black, depending on how the light hits it, with yellow on the edges of it's wings. It flies flat to the ground often just a couple of inches above, but it lands and looks more like a moth with it's wings tucked in. Just kind of skips along the ground, and I seldom see it get any higher than a few feet. If you get closer than about 6 feet to it, it will take off a few feet and land again. Sorry pics not the greatest, was chasing after it and snapping pics at the same time. Thanks.
