Carolina Mantis - Stagmomantis carolina - Male

Found this at the edge of a small wetland. The mantis was smaller than others I have seen there. Is it small because of its age or because of its species? Id, please?

Small
The males of this genus are skinny little squirrels and are much smaller than the females.
