Megaphorus minutus--mating - Megaphorus minutus - male - female

Megaphorus minutus--mating - Megaphorus minutus - Male Female
Carolina Beach State Park, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA
June 8, 2008
Size: 8-10 mm
A number of these small robber flies (size estimated 8-10 mm) were buzzing about a sandy trail on a very hot morning. Perhaps Megaphorus minutus? This pair flew from stem to stem while mating. Sometimes the male dangled quite helplessly below the larger female. (Identification confirmed by Herschel Raney.)
