Enyo lugubris
Franklin, NC, USA, Macon County, North Carolina, USA
September 30, 2020
Size: 1.5 inches
This moth was feeding rapidly, hummingbird-like, in a lantana bed, about 4 p.m. on a sunny, early autumn day.

Thank you for the ID.
I also appreciate the comment about the color. Perhaps our monitors are calibrated differently? I just got a new computer and the image looks brown on it to me, though admittedly not the chocolate brown that I observed in the moth. I will look into the calibration some more. I never would have realized that had you not commented, so thanks.

It's a good thing that you put the word "brown" in the title, because this image makes it look purple. Maybe that is an artifact of the image processing, but I'm not sure.
