Formicidae, hyper active in stem, lateral - Lasius americanus - Female
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
September 25, 2020
September 25, 2020: while collecting host plant stems of Green-headed coneflower, Rudbeckia laciniata, for 2 moth larvae, found this ant, active and with no inclination to leave the cut open stem. Rubber-banded the stem back together.
October 3, 2020: passed the ant in the stem onto my friend Lucas who at 10 years old had been catching queen ants to start a few small colonies. I thought it was a queen but only after Lucas told me she was laying eggs did I see the eggs (arrow) in a previous photo. Lucas suggests Brachymyrmex.
