Bird Dropping Moth - Antaeotricha

Bird Dropping Moth - Antaeotricha
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
June 1, 2005
This moth looks similar to the Antaeatricha in the guide although I did not think it looked much like a bird dropping when I first saw it. :) Am I close on the ID?

Yes, one of two species that are most likely.
The two are most easily separated by size, the markings being extremely similar. Covell gives Antaeotricha schlaegeri as being 2.1-3cm in wingspan, and A. leucillana at from 1.5-2.3cm. Almost all specimens that I have bothered to measure were safely outside the area of overlap. Just double overall body length as an estimate of wingspan. I actually have some bird droppings on the screen on top of the air conditioner unit where I have my moth light. Last night I had one of these sitting there and it was real easy to see the similarity :-))

Yes, one of two species that are most likely.
Thanks Bob for your help with the ID.
