This beetle also has

a longer non-arcuate pronotum with a slight flare out at its base and the antennae seem to be uniform in color, both of which traits augur in favor of Hypulus simulator (=Hypulus trifasciatus). Since dorsal marking also are a far closer match, I am moving this to Hypulus simulator, which is on the UNH checklist for New Hampshire beetles.

Prothalpia undata, Family Melandryidae

Specimens of Prothalpia undata LeConte, Family Melandryidae. Never common, but found under bark without too much trouble.

Don, this species may be Hypu

Don, this species may be Hypulus simulator rather than P. undata. They are similarly colored, but P. undata has a zigzag basal marking on the elytra rather than the longitudinal streak. H. simulator also has very large basal depressions on the pronotum, half the pronotal length or more.

Thanks Larry. I googled you and found credentials, but the only photos I was able to google up were the four on this page :-( Next time I encounter this species I will be able to get some better pix of it.

Check images at MCZ type database; Hypulus trifasciatus Melsh is a synonym of H. simulator, and Prothalpia undata holotype.
