Zuphium americanum? - Zuphioides americanum

Zuphium americanum? - Zuphioides americanum
700’ elevation, Loomis, 38.8198, -121.1173, Placer County, California, USA
May 27, 2020
Size: 5.5 mm
Taken from 20 watt UV light bucket trap set out and collected after 6 nights & days.

Posted to add CA to the distribution map - the only state west of TX so far.

I keyed this out to genus in Arnett (1). BG page states "Very narrow neck is unique among the Nearctic carabids" so I didn't picture various characters to prove identity, but they can be supplied upon request.

Z. americanum is the only species in the west, so it must be this. I don't see any mention of characters or keys to identify it.

Note: September 26, 2020.
I sent this specimen to Dr. Kipling (Kip) W. Will, UC Berkeley, CA. He determined by physical examination this specimen is Zuphioides americanum. I will add a comment with this information also.

Zuphioides americanum
I sent this specimen to Dr. Kipling (Kip) W. Will, UC Berkeley, CA. He determined by physical examination this specimen is Zuphioides americanum. So, I will move it to that location and notify Dr. Peter Messer.

New state record for California.
Thank you Glen & Kip for making the physical determination happen. I'll add it to the Registry of North American Caraboidea.

Zuphium longicolle and Z. pseudamericanum reported in CA,
but neither species fit well the dorsal habitus image in my opinion. Image appears like Z. americanum, but that would mean accepting a new California state range. Placer County is in the northern part of state. The known records closest to CA are western Oregon and Arizona. References: Catalogue by Bousquet (2012) and key to species by Mateu (1981).

Notes from Mateu (1981: Compared to Z. americanum, the pronotum of Z. pseudamericanum should have base more constricted and the head reddish-testaceous, not blackish as in americanum. The image certainly shows the prontal base strongly constricted, but the head is blackish. Go figure!

Pub?
Can't find any reference to Mateu (1981) in BG or Google Scholar. More specific title maybe or access to PDF and I can check the key.

I don't believe a PDF is freely available online,
so have your local library get it (photo-scan or pdf) via interlibrary loan. I think that's how I got a hard copy scan years ago. Please see my updated note above.

Mateu J (1981) Revision de los Zuphium Latreille del continente Americano (Coleoptera: Carabidae).
1a. Nota. Folia Entomológica Mexicana 47: 111-128

Head color
I've attached an image of the head with better lighting to show the darker red of the head in relation to the rest of the light red color of the rest of the body. This should make a big difference in your opinion.

Also, CA is between OR & AZ, so not surprising it would be here on the west slope of the Sierras.

Help with me head color:
dark reddish or blackish?

color?
Dark red. Not blackish.

Moving it
Personal email 10/12/2020 from Peter Messer: "If indeed reddish head, let’s just say your fine catch in Placer Co. is (provisionally) Zuphium pseudamericanum, a species already known in CA, but new to BugGuide.

So, with Peter's advise I'll move this specimen to Z. pseudamericanum.
