Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus - male

Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus - Male
Poughkeepsie, Casper Creek off Boardman Rd., Dutchess County, New York, USA
September 27, 2020
In October 2019, Benjamin Davidson posted this image of a male Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus. I had been wanting to see this species for years, so during a visit to that part of the state this year, I made a point to check out the spot at dusk. Unfortunately an ongoing drought had virtually dried up the creek, and I did not hear any singing males. I suspected that the dry weather might have resulted in an early cessation of the season for this wetland species, but nevertheless I decided to drive up the road with my windows open. Not five minutes away I stopped short upon hearing the distinctive call of a male N. exiliscanorus. Upon entering the marsh again, I heard about 3 distinct males and quickly located this one. Driving back to my hotel afterwards, I heard several more at another marsh site along the highway. Seems as though the drought reduced their abundance, but didn't eliminate them entirely.
