Mottled bark louse - Loensia moesta

Mottled bark louse - Loensia moesta
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 14, 2020
Seen grazing on... algae? on the surface of our plastic compost bid. It's head was bobbing and it was definitely gnawing on something, but I couldn't make out what. That said, I have seen other bark lice of other species on our compost bin, so it could be algae or pollen on it's surface, or residues left from the contents splattering about or insects walking on the filth inside then clambering on the outside of the compost bin. Who knows.

This is ...
Loensia moesta. Nice notes about feeding. Psocids like algae and molds.

Yeah, that's what seemed odd...
...because as you can see in the shots, there doesn't appear to be anything (or at least not much) growing on the surface of the plastic, but it could be that the magnification isn't enough to pick up on it.
