Erotides sculptilis

Erotides sculptilis
Orange County, North Carolina, USA
May 27, 2005
Size: 7 mm
Another posed shot of chilled specimen shows some details of the pronotum and head that were not visible in other photos.

In this photo, one can just see some mouthparts sticking out from the head. These were very prominent in the active insect, and "mouthparts visible from above" is one of the characters for the genus Calochromus mentioned in Dillon. (1) However this appears to be Eropterus--see comments by Phil Harpootlian and references in guide page.

On this photo, note especially how the pronotum (thorax) is divided into cells. This is a character of Platycis and Eropterus given by Arnett et al., p. 213 (2). The former has strong ridges, the latter has weak ridges, so it appears to match Europterus. (I'm just folowing along the key here, not doing it from scratch.)

NB:
For his E. sculptilis, Jim McClarin has created Platycis sculptilis page, with the name generally used in the U.S. (Or may be to avoid erotic connotations.) Consider moving your photos there or negotiating with Jim :-]

Roger that
Yes, I saw that after I had created an Erotides sculptilis page and moved my images. I went back and moved my images to Platycis sculptilis, deleted the Erotides sculptilis page, and made some notes on the various names in the guide pages for Platycis and Platycis sculptilis. So it seems that is all squared away now.

Thanks again for your help on this group--it is appreciated very much.

Moved from Eropterus. Thanks for ID!

probably Eropterus spp.
I keyed this to Eropterus - 4 NA spp., but would need to verify.
