Red Spotted Purple
Thanks. Someone else said it was that, so I guess it is. It's the first butterfly I have taken a photo of. It was staying in one place, so I was able to capture the shot.

If it was staying in one spot, it was probably "puddling", a practice often seen on hiking trails or trailhead parking lots. Male butterflies will take up salts and minerals from areas where animals have urinated or defecated.
