Presumed Blue Dasher Dragonfly - Pachydiplax longipennis

Presumed Blue Dasher Dragonfly - Pachydiplax longipennis
Jackson, back yard pond, Hinds County, Mississippi, USA
December 31, 1969
Size: about 2 inches
This insect has been hanging around my little pond for a couple of weeks now. It is usually seen in the morning, when sunlight is on the pond. Tends to perch on stems of a cyperus plant that comes up from water. Here shown eating a fly that it caught while circling around the pond at high speed. On another occasion I thought I observed it to drop something into the water from about a two foot elevation, and I interpreted this to be an egg. It happened twice within a few minutes. However from a field guide I suspect it is a male Pachydiplax longepennis, which would rule out the egg-dropping hypothesis. The series of photos I have was taken over a few days, from 8 June to 11 June, 2008.
