It's always good to show the hood. We have an expert visiting from time to time. To aid in ID, she'll want to know if your bug was solo or part of a colony. Also, do you know what plant it was on?

This bug was all by itself on a wild aster. I've let the native wild asters grow in the rock wall garden since they are great for attracting insects in the fall and are also enjoyed by birds in the winter. I've seen these bugs last year, too, but this was the first time I could get a good photo.
