Yellow-circled Bee - Bombus vosnesenskii

Yellow-circled Bee - Bombus vosnesenskii
San Joaquin Wildlife Refuge, Orange County, California, USA
June 14, 2008
Size: ~1cm, maybe larger
Not the best picture, but I didn't want to go tramping through the garden to get closer. I'm hoping the distinctive yellow ring on the abdomen may point the way to an ID.

Bombus vosnesenskii vs. caliginosus
It certainly looks like a yellow-faced bumble bee to me. However from John's comments here I guess there is one other species that looks very similar.

in Orange County it must be vosnesenskii

If I remember a previous post correctly...
...Dr. Ascher said there were only the two choices I mentioned above for Orange County.

Some interesting discussion here, relating to northern California species:

I think you'll need a mug shot
Dr. Ascher may be able to ID this one, but there are at least two local bees with the yellow ring: Bombus californicus (black face) and Bombus(Pyrobombus) vosnesenskii (yellow face).

I'd guess B. californicus, as they're more common and I've seen some recently (Riley).

I don't have a good face shot
I don't have a good face shot, but the two I do have, show enough yellow on the face to, I think, make this vosnesenskii. However I'll defer to the experts.
