Striking Fall caterpillar - Trichordestra legitima

Striking Fall caterpillar - Trichordestra legitima
Paoli, Orange County, Indiana, USA
October 25, 2020
Size: ~2cm
This pic shows the caterpillar's behavior when I found it; forward third inserted into the flower 'capsule' of a blue Gentian (Gentiana sp.).
Wondering if it was eating the Gentian, or just seeking physical shelter.
Next pic shows defensive posture.

Thanks John and Jane- I see
Thanks John and Jane-
I see from the Guide that their food tastes are quite catholic, apparently including Gentians.
