Beetle - Geotrupes egeriei
Sandy Hollow WMA, about 3 miles NW of Wilmer, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, USA
October 25, 2020
Size: about 15mm
Possibly Euetheola rugiceps. Found flying low through grass on pipeline right of way. The yellow exposed in flight produced a good bumble bee mimic. Landed and burrowed into the sandy soil.

Thanks for looking. I added two more photos in case they help.

Geotrupes egeriei
Hard to say for sure. Geotrupes blackburnii is the one that people often see very late in the season but that species is typically more bronzish and also has very fine sparse punctures on the pronotum. G. splendidus and G. egerei both tend to be more rotund like this beetle in these photos. You have to look at just the right angle to see it, but I think I can see hints of the bright blue punctures (best seen on the elytra and basal margin of the pronotum) that are distinctive for G. egeriei.
