Geotrupes balyi Bigelow Preserve, Somerset County, Maine, USA July 28, 2020 Size: 16 mm
Crawling on the ground in boreal forest at night. 45.1346, -70.1735
I just wanted to post this image as there continues to be a lot of confusion in the guide regarding this and some related species. Note that the sutural striae (best seen on the left side) bends and runs parallel alongside the scutellum all the way to the base of the elytra. Only G. hornii shares this character. G. balyi always has at least some metallic luster whereas G. hornii is jet black (albeit also very shiny).
