Contarinia virginianiae? - Contarinia virginianiae

Contarinia virginianiae? - Contarinia virginianiae
Sevenmile Creek, 8 kilometers northwest of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
August 18, 2020
Misshapen, hollow Prunus virginiana fruits without seed development, with an opening near the proximal end adjacent to the pedicel. Such misshapen fruits seen widespread along the creek this year (more so than the last three years) - hundreds of fruits like this. Cut one open and found 7 dorsally compressed, pinkish-red larvae, ca 3 mm long, crawling around and apparently feeding. Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed, shrubby riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland. Tentatively identified based on host plant, but I would like to confirm.
