Tingidae - Corythucha salicata

Tingidae - Corythucha salicata
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
June 28, 2003
One with a more ornate head covering, others were found on a wide range of plants.

Moved tentatively based on Laura's suggestion
Moved from Corythucha.

wild looking thing
The ornately sculptured surface reminds me of the exoskeleton of marine diatoms - so small that the details can only be seen in scanning electron micrographs.
I've read that many lace bugs are host-specific; what kind of tree/shrub was this individual on?

host
The Lace Bugs were found on just about everything, sage, ivy, yarrow, rose, grill, harley, just about anything. This season I'll try to notice if a specific plant might be the source and/or if a variety of species are present.

Look for the nymphs
The adults might just be flying around a bit. I have some azaleas in my back yard and the adults end up in various places, but the nymphs are always on the azalea.

I have some good coverage for a few species of lacebugs. They really are quite striking up close. The overall effect starts to make sense when viewed against a damaged leaf.

Lacebugs.
I remember once coming across literally hundreds, if not thousands of lacebugs, covering a small tree, and flying around. What causes such "explosions" I have no idea. This specimen is probably a species of Corythuca.

lace bug
I agree, Corythucha sp. for sure. Maybe salicata species. If we ever find out the host plant, that would be helpful.
My guess with the "explosions" is that can be related to overpopulation and insect dispersion.

Nymphs
and leaf damage will be watched for. Another item to occupy time while searching for the more spectacular. Thanks for the input.
