This specimen (4) was preserved in Oudemans' fluid (1). It was then fixed with Methanol:Acetic Acid:H20 2:2:1 by volume (2), causing its legs to extend and integument to expand. It was then cleared (incompletely) with lactophenol (2). After replacing the clearing agent with EtOH, then clove oil, it was soaked and slide mounted in Cargille immersion oil type OVH preheated to 150F. This oil has high-viscosity at room temperaure, so reduces or eliminates migration. It was then covered with a Thorlabs CG00C #0 85-115 µm Schott D 263 M glass cover, and ringed (sealed) with Norland NOA61 UV-cured optical adhesive. The specimen was not cleared, so (brown) internal organs obscur many features. The featherclaws (tarsal empodia (3)) are well-displayed, however.

The image is from a Helicon Focus processed stack of 94 images with a 0.4 µm step taken with a Nikon CFI Plan 50×/0.9 ∞/- mm oil microscope objective + Nikon 200 mm F4 AIS telephoto lens + Nikon D810 camera (magnification 50×; technique described here). The slide was dark field illuminated from behind with a 1.18-1.42 N/A condenser.
