Mycetophilid aggregation

Mycetophilid aggregation
Pulpit Rock Concervation Land, Bedford, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 7, 2020
Size: 5 mm
A number of large mycetophilids were found congregating within a crack inside an overhanging birch tree growing beside a boulder bordering the stream flowing from Pulpit Rock.

This photograph shows one side of the crack which was situated about the fork in the tree's trunks. The lower trunk had died and the flies were gathering within the crack between the two trunks, while the upper trunk was still alive. A ridge of bark formed a wall the flies can be seen gathering atop of. This is what I first saw when I noticed them initially.
