Mycetophilid aggregation

Mycetophilid aggregation
Pulpit Rock Concervation Land, Bedford, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 7, 2020
Size: 5 mm
This photo shows the inner side of the wall of bark and decaying wood shown in the first photo. The mycetophilids had largely gathered inside the cavity rotted out by whatever fungus must have been at play. Looking close up at the photos I had taken, it's difficult to tell if this gathering was made up of both sexes or if the shorter antennae of some individuals, a trait I would normally associate with females, was simply the result of perspective.
