Bird-dropping Moth - Acleris nivisellana

Bird-dropping Moth - Acleris nivisellana
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
September 10, 2020
Found in the gazebo.
It's a bit hard to see, but the wings are actually sculpted and have small bumps on them. A VERY convincing mimic!
I looked at Ponometia but none of them looked like they had the same markings as this one?

Bird dropping mimicry is moths is a great example of convergent evolution. It has evolved independently a number of times. Other examples include Cerma, Baileya, Maliattha, and Antaeotricha.
