Thrypticus, Muhlenbergia - Thrypticus

Thrypticus, Muhlenbergia - Thrypticus
Luther College Hickory Ridge Woods, Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
November 27, 2020
27 Nov 2020: Thrypticus larvae found overwintering inside culms of muhly grass, Muhlenbergia sp. One of the inhabited culms I found had simply lodged, but most had been cleanly cut off a few inches above ground level and plugged with shredded plant matter or frass. This is the third grass species in whose culms I've found overwintering Thrypticus larvae in Winneshiek County; the other two are Virginia wild rye (Elymus virginicus) and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) .

Johannsen and Crosby (1913) described Thrypticus muhlenbergiae from specimens reared from Muhlenbergia in New York. I don't know if the larvae I found belong to that species, but I'll try to rear some adult males in order to find out (assuming I can locate someone who will ID my specimens!).

Another Thrypticus larva from the same population of host plant:
